I couldn't sleep, ended up here.
I've been reading a book called 'The Chosen' by Chaim Potok, which really confused me from the back blurb. It basically suggested that the book would be about a baseball game in America which turned into a religious war between 2 different Jewish communities. Jewish immigrants playing baseball? Religion and baseball?

But I guess its essentially about a boy who is set to become a rabbi once his father dies against his will. He is completely trapped by thousands of years worth of history and custom, as he belongs to Hasidism, a very traditional religious branch. He is forbidden from exposure to non-religious literature, and yet he sneaks out to the library every day to read Hemmingway and Darwin in secret. Its funny how we see our freedom as so trivial...

This got me thinking abou Boris Pasternak's book Dr Zivago, which won the Nobel prize for Literature in 1958. This book was written by a Russian, about Russia in 1956, and yet because of the Iron Curtain and political oppression, was only published in the USSR in 1988!
Just crazy.

I just looked up The Sound of Music on youtube, and one of the comments was "I wish I lived in the 30's!"

Someone replied with:

"Ah yes, it was such a great time. Think of all the great things we've lost.

Hitler and the Holocaust, Stalin and the Great Purge, Spanish flu, smallpox and polio, Racial segregation and government sponsored racism, Women's suffrage and equal rights, the Great Depression, prohibition and let''s not forget World War 2

Yeah, the 1930's were a great time. "

you can't have the good without the bad.
and on that note, i need to go study for exams. nooooooooooo.

MUSE at Big Day Out

I was very disappointed with the setlist for Big Day Out.. Considering Muse were headlining, I think they could afford to mix the setlist up a little! I mean, there was nothing from Showbiz, while at the same time they played Time Is Running Out, Hysteria and Stockholm Syndrome, which were the "big" songs of their last BDO in 2004. Here's the setlist from memory:

Map of The Problematique
Butterflies and Hurricanes
Assassin
Suppermassive Black Hole
Plug In Baby
Stockholm Syndrome
New Born
Hysteria
Feeling Good
Starlight
Time is Running Out
Knights of Cydonia

And then I came across a setlist from their Sydney sideshow (I'm going to the Melbourne sideshow tomorrow)- it was extremely similar! So this is how fans get rewarded... I could have missed their entire set at Big Day Out and seen pretty much the same thing on Tuesday.

That aside, they played really well. I wish Matt moved more than a metre away from his mic, though! I managed to get 4 people away from the rail but to the centre/right of the stage, while he stayed on the left. I'm glad I have another chance, though!
